The EPA
has released official fuel economy numbers on the refreshed 2016 Kia Rio sedan and hatchback, and they
remain nearly unchanged from the 2015 Rio.
The
2016 Rio with a 1.6-liter
inline four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission returns 27 mpg in
city driving and 38 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 31 mpg. That's
an improvement of just 1 mpg over the 2015 Rio in highway driving, but does not
change the Rio's 31-mpg average.
The
2016 Rio with the
same engine and a six-speed automatic transmission returns 27 mpg in city
driving and 37 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 31 mpg.
A
six-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2016 Rio sedan, while a
six-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Rio hatchback. The
six-speed manual is no longer offered in the Rio hatchback.
The
2016 Rio, which debuted
at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, is expected to arrive at Kia dealerships in the first
quarter of 2016.
Upgrades
include two new exterior colors, new front and rear fascias, and an optional
two-tone Designer package.
Pricing
has not been announced.
Key Rio competitors include the
Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent and Nissan Versa Note.
The AAA
Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Monday pegged the average price for a gallon of
unleaded gasoline at $2.38 versus $3.63 a year ago.
