The
redesigned 2016 Kia Sorento crossover has earned a
2015 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
While the last-generation Sorento earned a 2013 Top Safety Pick award, the
requirements to earn the distinction changes every year.
Where
the previous-generation Kia Sorento earned a Poor rating in
the small overlap front test, the new 2016 model earns a Good rating. The 2016 Sorento’s small
overlap front test results were significantly better than those of the 2014
model. In the small overlap front test, the 2014 Sorento suffered 11 inches of
intrusion at the brake pedal, the side curtain airbag failed to deploy, and the
front airbag and dummy’s head didn’t line up correctly. The 2016 Sorento fared much
better with only four inches of intrusion at the footrest, side and front
airbags worked together to keep the dummy in place. The test results indicate
less chance of injury for the new model versus the old model.
The
small overlap front test was introduced in 2012 to simulate what happens when
the front corner of a vehicle crashes with another vehicle or stationary
object. Additionally, the 2016 Kia Sorento earned Good ratings in
the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats
tests - the same score as the previous model.

Vehicles
earning a good or acceptable rating in the small front overlap test and a good
rating in the other tests are considered a 2015 Top Safety Pick. Additionally,
the 2016 Kia Sorento’s available forward
collision warning earns it a basic rating for front crash protection.
