You may have noticed
unrelenting growth of the mid-size SUV/crossover market with a vast array of
new models being revealed recently. Kia is no stranger to this class, and the
latest version of its popular Sportage
is back.
The latest model made its
public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show with a design inspired by the
KX-3 concept first shown in China last year. It's described as "bold and
progressive" and features all the latest Kia design cues such as the distinctive
front grille, sharp lines and LED lights.
From afar it's not too
different from the current Sportage, but a
redesigned 'Tiger Nose' front-end, more steeply raked windscreen and sloping
window line ensure the newest model looks fresh.
The broader shoulderline
gives it a more muscular look, while at the back a new chrome strip links the
redesigned light clusters. A metallic rear skidplate also appears, and there's
liberal use of chrome for the exhausts, lower door trim and roof bars.
Kia claims the Sportage will
receive its “most refined, highest-quality cabin to date”. Quality soft-touch
materials and a classier design will feature, as will the latest array of
infotainment, connectivity and active safety tech. Features such as leather
sports seats and ambient lighting can also be seen in the cabin sketch.
It’s not clear if this new
design will impact on practicality, as the current Sportage has one of the biggest
boots in its class. Certainly the KX-3 concept was slightly shorter and
narrower than today’s car, and the boot was 62 litres smaller.
In terms of engines we can
expect the familiar range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains will
feature. The option of front or
four-wheel drive should still be offered, too.
